Stone Walling Course with Kristín Auður Kelddal – Traditional Craftsmanship in Hafnir

Join us in the remote and windswept village of Hafnir, on the Reykjanes Peninsula, for a hands-on introduction to Iceland’s age-old stone walling traditions. Led by Kristín Auður Kelddal – a certified horticulturist and experienced craftswoman – this workshop offers practical skills in dry stone walling while exploring the stories, landscape, and heritage of the region.

Participants will work with natural local stone, learn essential techniques for building and repairing traditional turf-bound walls and ruins, and gain insight into the cultural context that shaped these structures over centuries. The course is taught outdoors in an inspiring historical setting, where every stone has a story.

No previous experience is required – just a willingness to learn, use your hands, and engage with Iceland’s tangible past.

  • All tools provided
  • Small group setting (max 10–12 participants)
  • Taught in English (with Icelandic if needed)
  • Ideal for heritage enthusiasts, craftspeople, artists, or curious travellers

This course is open to everyone – no previous experience is needed. We encourage participants to work at their own pace, take breaks whenever they need, and do only what they feel comfortable with. Nobody is pushed too hard – this is about learning, enjoyment, and shared craftsmanship.

Let us know if there’s anything we should keep in mind to make your experience even better (physical concerns, preferences, etc.).
